North Carolina News You Can Use

Black History Month is here!

And North Carolina is in the mood for celebration and remembrance. We have a long history with the civil rights movement, including the Greensboro sit-ins at Woolworth, and a vibrant community of Black artists, musicians, academics, and businesses.

Here are 10 Black History Month events across the state ranging from parades and concerts to art shows and special guest appearances.

Black History Month Parade
📍Durham
Feb. 3

The 21st Annual MLK Black History Month Parade in Durham is kicking off the first Saturday of  Black History Month with marching bands, step teams, Black Cowboys, and community groups! The event starts at noon and is open to the public. 
Black History Month Concert
Feb. 4, 18, 25
📍Carrboro

The town of Carrboro is holding three concerts during February that are free and open to the public as part of their Black History Month celebration. Artists include R&B singer and songwriter Erin Blue, jazz, R&B, neo-soul fusion group Collective Groove Band, and singer Mary Williams. 
2024 Black Heritage Festival
📍Concord
Feb. 10

The celebration continues in concord with the 7th Annual NC Black Heritage Festival. More than 100 Black-owned companies will be at the Cabarrus Arena from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Families can enjoy kid-friendly games, like baby bumper cars, basketball, and live performances.

Crayons and Culture: Black History Month Kids Workshop
📍Durham
Feb. 10, 18, 27

Sign up for one of the three workshops with Crayons and Culture, a grassroots education center, teaching kids about the vibrant history of Black individuals and culture! The workshop includes fun and engaging activities like storytelling, coloring, and hands-on games.  
HBCU Made: A Celebration of the Black College Experience
📍Winston-Salem
Feb. 12

Winston-Salem State University and Bookmarks are teaming up with editor, Ayesha Roscoe for a conversation about ‘HBCU Made: A Celebration of the Black College Experience.’ The book, which Roscoe edited, is a collection of essays highlighting the experiences of students, staff, and alumni of Historically Black Colleges.

Harvey Gantt Center
📍Charlotte
Feb. 17, 23 
The Harvey Gantt Center is celebrates African-American arts, culture, and history all year long, and this month they’re bring a special workshops and performances to Charlotte. On the 17th join them for a ‘Black History on Canvas’ painting workshop, and on the 21st they’re hosting a kickoff celebration for the Big Read, a free five-month program promoting literacy.   
Black History Month Art Invitational
📍Lexington
Feb. 18

The Black Butterfly Network is hosting local artists on the third Sunday of the month at the Art 202 studio in Lexington. Featured art will focus on expressions of freedom, art as a tool in activism, and the resilience and power of the Black community.

Artists are encouraged to sign up to have their work displayed!

The Black Wall Street Experience
📍Winston-Salem
Feb. 19 
If you’re in Winston-Salem, join Black Wall Street Forward as they share their vision of uplifting and empowering Black-owned businesses in Winston-Salem. The presentation at Sparq will focus on a strategy curated for Winston-Salem and welcomes participation, insight, and feedback.
Issa Rae Speaks at A&T
📍Greensboro
Feb. 21
CEO, actress, writer, and producer Issa Rae will make an appearance at NC A&T this month as part of the university’s ‘Standin’ on Business’ speaker series. The conversation is moderated by alumna Toya Bynum and will focus on entrepreneurship and business development.
African American Heritage Festival
📍Charlotte
Feb. 24
The Charlotte Museum of History is hosting their annual African American Heritage Festival on the last Saturday of February! Enjoy free admission to the festival along with performances, guest speakers, art, and more.
