News, Opinion & Events for Charlotte's African American community
There’s never a bad time for a quick getaway. Whether you’re looking for some R&R to end the summer or a nice fall fling once the temperatures cool down, we typically think of major hotels, Airbnb or family and friends’ homes when it comes to accommodation options.
You may also want to consider the bed-and-breakfast option. Two black-owned B&Bs, located a couple of hours from Charlotte, scream southern charm and offer signature hospitality.
Morehead Manor
If you’re making your way to the Raleigh/Durham area, check out Morehead Manor. In 1997, the innkeepers, Monica and Daniel Edwards (both North Carolina Central University graduates), opened the B&B minutes from downtown Durham. The early-1900s, colonial revival-style home has some unique features including a dining room mural of elegantly dressed black figures, a seven-head shower and a garden swing in the lawn.
Thee Matriarch Bed and Breakfast
Recognized as one of South Carolina’s best bed-and-breakfast wedding venues, Thee Matriarch is a century-old, Victorian-style inn located in Orangeburg, S.C. It opened in 2012 and has quickly become one of the most popular black-owned B&Bs. The innkeepers, husband-and-wife team Chef Fred and Rachelle Holmes, are both South Carolina natives. Rachelle, a Winthrop University fashion design and merchandising graduate, spent time as an assistant buyer at Ivey’s department store in Charlotte in the late 1980s. Each room is named after a woman who has affected the couple’s lives, like their mothers and grandmothers.

Don’t limit yourself to the Carolinas for black-owned B&Bs and inns. Browse through the Inns of Color directory for a list of options across the country.
